Lake Wildwood and Penn Valley
 
The first settlers of Penn Valley were the Maidu Indians, camping along the streams and natural springs. According to a legend, Penn Valley got its name from the fact a livestock “pen” was built there in the early days, adding to the agriculture resources of beef and dairy cattle. Its ideal location between Sacramento and Marysville on the way to the Motherlode mines made it a model stopover for travelers to purchase meat, produce, fruit, supplies and services. Because of its trading economic foundation, when the mining operations cut back, Penn Valley was able to survive.

Penn Valley and the surrounding areas offer a multitude of recreation possibilities for its residents. Horseback riding, including the Penn Valley Rodeo is a favorite pastime of the populace. Residents can enjoy the miles of wineries where the high altitude climate and warm sunny days help to create the quality wines of area. For family trips, take the kids to the Imaginarium, a hands-on interactive science museum in the Valley area. Every Saturday during the spring, summer and into autumn, residents gather at the fairgrounds to sell produce from their home gardens. Take a walk around the Growers Market for the fresh fruit and produce, sweet honey, or fresh-baked bread to make your belly smile. The beautiful area also boasts plenty of biking, hiking, boating, golf, camping and picnicking for year round enjoyment.

With such a short proximity to San Francisco and Sacramento’s downtown areas, the arts, theatre and a bustling nightlife are readily available to the residents of Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood. Cultural vignettes spot the city, diversity programs, historical sites and a beautiful landscape top the list of conveniences available to its populace.
